AMAZON ALEXA SYNC SETUP

The DEKOR EZ WiFi dimmer has a new friend – Amazon’s Alexa!  The July 2018 release of both firmware for the dimmer and apps for your mobile devices adds the ability to customize your DEKOR lights from anywhere you can access the internet, and supports an Alexa skill that lets you control your lights with your voice. 1. Get the app

The new Android and iOS apps are required to update dimmers, control your lights, and integrate with Alexa.  If you have the original (1.0) version of the DEKOR app, please update now.

When you open the new app, you will see a login screen.  You will need to create an account the first time you open the app, so tap “Create One” and provide your name, an email address you can access easily, and choose a password. This account will let you control your lights even when you’re not on your home WiFi network and identifies your lights when you activate the Alexa skill.  DEKOR does not store or use any of the data associated with your account.

Click “Submit”. You will receive a success message in the app and an activation email at the address provided.  This email is sent from [email protected] under the name “Dekor App”.  Please click the activation link to confirm your email address.

Once your account is activated, reopen the app on your mobile device and enter the credentials for your newly created DEKOR account.  You’ll be taken to the dashboard, which  may be blank even if you have existing dimmers installed on your network.

Don’t panic. You just need to update your dimmers and associate them with the account you just created.

If you attempt to reconnect your dimmers to the new Android or iOS app before updating the dimmer firmware, the dimmer will become unresponsive and need to be reconfigured. Reset your dimmer by holding down the ON/OFF button until the blue SYNC-WiFi LED goes out and proceed as if you were adding a brand new light.

To update your dimmers, follow the on-screen instructions in your app.

2. Set up & associate dimmers

Whether you updated existing dimmers or just took them out of the box, you need to associate them with your Dekor account.  Tap the “add” icon at the top of the app dashboard and read the pop-up to ensure you’ll be able to connect your lights using your router.  The router must be broadcasting at 2.4GHz and your mobile device must be connected to this 2.4GHz network.    

Enter your WiFi network’s password and tap “Connect Lights”.  This may take up to a minute and may require more than one attempt, depending on your network. If no lights appear after the progress bar completes, exit to the dashboard and tap the “Refresh” icon before retrying the “Add” process.

When one or more lights are found, they appear in the Lights Setup page.  Click one to give it an intuitive name, such as “Garden Lights” or “Back Patio.”

This light will now appear in your dashboard.  From there, you can turn the light on or off and control the brightness, or tap the light name to rename it and/or set up a schedule.  Repeat this process for any other dimmers you need to attach to your Dekor account.

3. Activate the Alexa Dekor Skill

Ready to start controlling your lights with your voice? Open the Amazon Alexa app on your phone or navigate to alexa.amazon.com in a browser.

Sign in with the same Amazon account you used to set up your Alexa-enabled device (such as an Echo or Echo Dot) and click “Skills”.

Search for “Dekor” and select the Dekor Skill.

Click “Enable”.  You will be taken to a page to provide the same credentials you use to login to the Dekor app on your phone, and your preferred time zone.

You will see a success message.  If you do not, please unlink the skill in the Alexa app and try again.

Using the Alexa Dekor Skill

To open the Dekor app, simply say “Alexa, open Dekor”.  While you are in the app, Alexa will keep listening for new commands so you do not need to say “Alexa” in front of each one.  Each command references a specific dimmer exactly as it is named in your Android or iOS app.  We will use the light we named “Back Patio” as an example here.

Commands and Requests

You may ask Alexa to perform the following actions:

On/Off, such as “Turn on the Back Patio”

Brightness, such as “Set the Back Patio to 25%”

Scheduling, such as “Turn on my Back Patio at 3pm on weekends” or “Turn on the Back Patio for 30 minutes”

You may also ask Alexa the brightness of your lights, such as “How bright is the Back Patio?”

When you are finished configuring your Dekor lights, you may exit the app by saying “close”.

If you only want to issue one command or request, you can combine the “Alexa” wake word with the Dekor skill:

“Alexa, tell Dekor to turn off the Back Patio”

“Alexa, ask Dekor the brightness of the Back Patio”
